History of the Society

The Society for Personality Assessment (SPA) was founded in Essex County, New Jersey by Bruno Klopfer (right) and a group of his students. The Society is a collegial organization dedicated to the advancement of professional personality assessment, to the development of procedures and concepts for personality assessment and to the ethical and responsible use of these techniques.

Initially incorporated as the Rorschach Institute, Inc., in 1938 the Society was renamed in 1971 to reflect the Society's interest in the entire spectrum of issues present in contemporary personality assessment and to focus the Society as a special interest group, concerned with promoting exchange of ideas and information about personality assessment in research and in practice.

In December, 1994 the Society for Personality Assessment moved its central office from St. Petersburg, FL to Washington, DC in order to be in closer proximity to Congress and other national research, educational, and health care organizations.

In 1997 we moved from the American Psychological Association building on Capitol Hill to expanded offices in suburban Falls Church, VA. As the Society has begun to expand its advocacy efforts on behalf of the field of personality assessment, we found that we needed larger quarters. Our new headquarters are located within easy commuting distance of Washington.

Members receive the Journal of Personality Assessment as part of their membership privileges, as well as The Exchange, our newsletter, which is published twice yearly. Members are also eligible to participate in the scientific program of our Annual Meeting, organized and conducted by the Society in partial fulfillment of the incorporators' objective "to provide an annual assembly of the membership for the purpose of sharing research findings and clinical experiences." For an extra $30.00, members may join the International Rorschach Society, membership in which includes a subscription to Rorschachiana and participation in the triennial International Congress on Rorschach and Projective Techniques.

The Officers and Board Members invite you to join.
