PERSONALITY ASSESSMENT RECOGNIZED BY APA AS A PROFICENCY IN PROFESSIONAL PSYCHOLOGY

At its August 2010 meeting, the APA Council of Representatives voted to include Personality Assessment as a Proficiency in professional psychology. This was the culmination of a 3-year effort by the SPA Board of Trustees and dozens of SPA members at large who participated in work groups to organize, develop, write, edit, and revise the CRSPPP application and shepherd it through the approval process. We were also supported in this effort by APA Division 12, Section 9, whose leadership has included many of our members.

APA’s formal recognition of Personality Assessment as Proficiency conferred upon SPA both the privilege and the responsibility of establishing criteria for Proficiency in our field, devising appropriate training opportunities for those who wish to become proficient, and offering suitable certification of proficiency to recognize those who attain it. (As always, those who have attained not only proficiency but also mastery of Personality Assessment as a specialty may seek diplomate status from the American Board of Assessment Psychology [ABAP]).

The SPA Board of Trustees is currently in the process of developing training programs and a formal application process for those who wish to be recognized as proficient in Personality Assessment.
