Professional Bio

Alicia W. Villanueva van den Hurk is a third-year doctoral student in Clinical Psychology at the University of Detroit Mercy. Her professional interests include both psychological assessment and psychotherapy, with a primary emphasis on assessment. Her clinical and research work focus on severe mental illness, particularly conditions involving psychosis, including schizophrenia spectrum disorders and bipolar I disorder.
In addition to general clinical training, her clinical work includes a strong forensic component, with experience and scholarly interests in the intersection of mental health and the legal system. Her research and clinical interests include mental health stigma, criminal responsibility, and competency issues. Alicia has developed experience working with individuals presenting with complex psychiatric and forensic concerns and is committed to culturally responsive, ethically grounded practice. She is fluent in English and Spanish and intentionally integrates cultural awareness into both assessment and clinical care.
