The transition toward dimensional models of personality pathology in both the DSM 5 Alternative Model for Personality Disorders (AMPD) and the ICD 11 diagnostic classification has created new opportunities for more nuanced and clinically meaningful case formulation and treatment planning. This webinar introduces key concepts from both systems, with particular emphasis on how AMPD’s Criterion A (personality functioning) and Criterion B (pathological personality traits) correspond to the ICD 11 distinction between severity and trait domain specifiers—underscoring implications for the field’s transition to ICD 11 classification across all WHO member states.

The webinar focuses on how clinical assessment and interpretation of aspects of personality functioning can strengthen an individualized approach to diagnosis and treatment planning. To support this process, the Diagnostic Interview for Personality Pathology based on ICD 11 (DIPP 11) will be used as the primary framework, illustrated through clinical case material. Particular emphasis will be placed on translating assessments of personality functioning into intervention planning, as well as on the clinical interpretation of additional trait domain expressions.

Presenter: Dr. Bo Bach

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the core components of the DSM‑5 Alternative Model for Personality Disorders (AMPD) and the ICD‑11 dimensional model of personality pathology, including the roles of personality functioning and trait domain specifiers.
  2. Explain how AMPD Criterion A and Criterion B correspond to the ICD‑11 distinctions between severity and trait domains, and identify the clinical implications of the field’s transition to ICD‑11 across WHO member states.
  3. Apply structured approaches to assessing personality functioning using tools such as the Diagnostic Interview for Personality Pathology based on ICD‑11 (DIPP‑11) when formulating clinical impressions and treatment plans.
  4. Integrate dimensional assessments of personality functioning and trait domain expressions into individualized treatment planning, including identifying intervention targets and anticipating therapeutic challenges.

Skill Level: Recommend intermediate and advanced are recommended - while beginners may also benefit from it.

Bo Bach serves as Clinical Professor of Psychology at the University of Copenhagen and is a senior researcher and clinician at Central and West Zealand Hospital in Denmark, where he contributes to research, assessment, and treatment development for complex personality pathology. His work focuses on ICD 11 and DSM 5 AMPD models of personality disorder, personality functioning, trait based assessment, and differential diagnostics—including distinctions between personality disorders, complex PTSD, and neurodevelopmental conditions. Professor Bach has co developed the Diagnostic Interview for Personality Pathology based on ICD 11 (DIPP 11) and the Personality Disorder Severity ICD 11 (PDS ICD 11) scale, both currently being implemented and evaluated across several countries.

He has contributed extensively to global classification efforts through his role as a consultant to the World Health Organization’s ICD 11 personality disorder workgroup and field trials. His research is situated at the forefront of empirically based psychopathology, including participation in the HiTOP consortium, which aims to build a data driven taxonomy of mental disorders.

Professor Bach is co author or editor of several major clinical texts, including ICD 11 Personality Disorders: A Clinician’s Guide and the Diagnostic Interview for Personality Pathology in ICD 11 (DIPP 11), and serves on the editorial boards of Personality Disorders: Theory, Research, and Treatment and the Journal of Personality Assessment. He is currently co-chair of the World Psychiatric Association (WPA) Personality Disorder section.
