Shame is a key but frequently unrecognized driver of the very symptoms and interpersonal difficulties that we examine in personality assessment. Shame affect and defenses are commonly misunderstood, which hinders accurate assessment and case conceptualization. This webinar will begin with a brief primer on shame, using Thurston Cradock Test of Shame (TCTS) protocols and stimulus cards to illustrate common shame themes, behavioral and nonverbal manifestations of shame, shame defenses, and factors that exacerbate shame. Attendees will learn the basics of TCTS test administration and scoring. The presentation of a clinical case will illustrate how TCTS scoring and interpretation clarified the underlying shame dynamics which had eluded the client, referring therapist and assessor.

Presenter: Dr. Julie Cradock O'Leary

Learning Objectives:

At the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Explain when a formal assessment of shame is warranted
  • Identify at least 3 diagnoses that may have shame at their core
  • Name 4 defenses against shame
  • Describe how TCTS cards can be used in a clinical intervention
  • Understand the basics of TCTS administration and scoring
