Roundtable Moderated Panel Discussio What Role Should Neurobiological Research Have in Advancing HiT
SPA E-Learning Center | 2025 SPA Convention
Abstract
This roundtable discussion brings together experts with diverse opinions for a lively moderated panel on the role of neurobiological research in advancing the aims of HiTOP. The panelists bridge psychopathology content areas and include those who regularly use neurobiological measures and those who prioritize report-based approaches. Broadly, we will critically discuss the common claim that neurobiological research can facilitate a more comprehensive and potentially mechanistic understanding of individual differences in psychopathology, which could be translated to advances in nosology and treatment. Can such research provide meaningful information about psychopathology, and in what ways? If so, do these benefits outweigh the costs? Panelists will also offer perspectives on current issues in the conduct of neurobiological research (e.g., reliability, validity, and replicability issues; lack of attention to sociodemographic and developmental considerations) that may hinder progress in clarifying the neurobiological correlates of HiTOP dimensions. Ultimately, this dynamic discussion aims to tackle big-picture questions about what neurobiology can offer HiTOP and clinical psychology more broadly, and to identify pragmatic and collaborative ways forward that harness the power of neurobiology to elucidate clinical phenomena.
