Everything Graduate Students and Postdocs Need to Know about Therapeutic Assessment

Abstract

This roundtable discussion is designed for graduate students and post-doctoral candidates who are interested in learning about Therapeutic Assessment (TA). Educators and supervisors will also find this discussion valuable. Overall, participants will come to understand the basic tenets of the TA model and identify training and educational goals. Initially, an overview of the various TA models, concepts, values, and steps will be provided to set the stage for the discussion. The supervisors and post-doc panel members will focus on educational and training paths. The panel will also discuss approaches to supervision and training, with an emphasis on cultural and contextual considerations in both the trainee-client and trainee-supervisor relationships. There will also be a discussion of the personal qualities that enhance a psychologist’s ability to conduct TAs. The panel members will provide their perceptions of the optimal training opportunities that help develop the competencies to practice TA. During this presentation, there will be ample time for participants to ask questions of the panel.
