Personality Assessment on Both Sides of the Law Characteristics Associated with Misconduct in Applie

Abstract

Misconduct in the criminal justice system and related settings poses a significant risk for individuals’ safety and the safety and security of others. Research suggests that contextual factors and personality characteristics contribute to engagement in misconduct; however, identifying specific factors associated with misconduct in samples such as correctional officers and delinquent or at-risk adolescents is essential for personality assessment professionals. We will present four studies comparing personality assessment results to measures of misconduct. First, we will have a presentation on CU traits, empathy, and delinquency among youth in a residential program. Second, results relating the PAI-A to substance use patterns and consequences in a similar but geographically distinct sample of youth will be presented. The third and fourth speakers will present on aspects of pre-employment evaluation PAIs and CPIs that were prospectively associated with arrests and sexual misconduct in samples of corrections officers. Our discussant will comment on these presentations and identify themes and future directions for research on the links between personality assessment and misconduct for both potential law enforcement officers and youth at risk for criminal behavior.
