Supervision is an Ever-Evolving Process-As Years Pass, We Must Grow as People in Addition to Learni

Abstract

In the last twenty years, there have been discernible shifts in who psychology serves, as well as who applies to become a psychologist. Who we train and who we train students to work with has changed, though many of us trained years ago within a different framework of the field and supervision practices. And while there have been recent changes requiring specific training in conducting clinical supervision, and many jurisdictions require CEUs that are socio-politically informed for those who conduct clinical supervision, the 2020 APA Guidelines for Psychological Assessment and Evaluation simply states that “Psychologists who train and supervise students, employees, and others consider engaging in CE that specifically focuses on advancements in the teaching, supervision, and practice of testing, assessment, and evaluation. Consultation and supervision of supervision are often effective mechanisms to maintain one’s competence.” This panel consists of supervisors and supervisees who will seek to understand tension points which arise in supervision and will ask what needs to change and expand in order to be a competent assessment supervisor (as opposed to an assessor who supervises), meaning specifically that competent supervisors in our current moment must both be attuned to socio-political dimensions and shifts in the field, the world, and in how attitudes toward assessment may be changing as much as they are experts in the instruments and uses of assessment.
