The Science of Cognitive Assessment and Demographics At the Intersections of Science, Practice, and

Abstract

Assessment is a cornerstone of psychological science and practice. Psychologists commonly encounter situations where they must distinguish between normal variability and pathological characteristics. Accurate identification of a cognitive or personality disorder ensures that the treatment plan addresses the specific needs of the patient. For cognitive assessment, it is important for psychologists to understand common cognitive disorders and profiles that allow providers to tailor therapeutic interventions appropriately, considering cognitive strengths and limitations; however, this general model and these considerations can be used more broadly within psychological assessment. Psychologists are required to know and understand how their assessment instruments may benefit or harm those on whom they are used. Psychologists have an ethical duty to do no harm and to use assessment instruments whose validity and reliability have been established for members of the populations tested. This workshop will cover the identification assessment techniques, and the importance of ethnoracial considerations and how they influence individual performances.
